THE LPG APPROVAL SCHEME

About the LPGA Approved Installer Scheme

Consumers should look out for the logo of the Scheme to ensure that the conversion will be undertaken in a safe and satisfactory manner. The logo is only available to LPGA Approved Installers and a check against misrepresentation can be made as bove.

Following conversion of a vehicle an LPGA Approved Installer will provide the owner with an LPG Conversion Certificate. These A5 size MOT style Certificates are only issued by the Association to LPGA Approved Installers and have a number of unique features:

The Scheme, set up in conjunction with the DfT, is the standard for the industry and the only scheme to receive official government recognision.

In order to maintain satisfactory standards of safety for vehicles which have been converted to run on LP gas, a system of approving installers has been introduced. Participants in the Scheme demonstrate that they have the necessary skills and knowledge in order to carry out this work in a safe and satisfactory manner. This approval system is a voluntary one, and its existence has been promoted to transport operators, local authorities, Government departments and the general public, etc., in order that these people can choose on an informed basis a competent conversion company. There are many manufacturers of conversion equipment and a conversion company will usually specialise in one or more makes of equipment on which their technicians have received specific training. On completion of the conversion, the company will provide the customer with a Certificate signed by the "approved" technician to verify that the standards of the LPGA have been fully complied with.

The Scheme is operated in good faith to try and maintain good standards of workmanship and safety. However, neither the DfT nor the LP Gas Association accepts any liability for any work undertaken by approved companies.

APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS

Approval is obtained by a company in conjunction with a named technician(s) who is responsible for the quality of the conversion. The technician will have had training in the installation of LP gas conversion equipment by the manufacturer, or their agent, whose equipment is being installed. He has also demonstrated a thorough understanding of the LPGA Code of Practice No.11, a clear understanding of the appropriate sections of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (as amended) and passed the LPGA written "examination". Following this there is an inspection of one vehicle converted by each technician confirming that the work has been undertaken with the required skill and competence and that the applicant is able to demonstrate sufficient practical experience to handle conversion work on other types of vehicles. At the same time the company has to comply with specific requirements for premises and management procedures Only when all the above are satisfactory will the company be able to claim LPGA Approved Installer Scheme status and be able to use the special Logo shown above. Approval is given for a period of five years subject to standards being maintained and continuing compliance with the terms of the Scheme. A full and up to date list of LPGA Approved Installers can be obtained from the website www.lpga.co.uk or by contacting the Association direct (see details below)

INSURANCE

When a vehicle has been converted to run on LP Gas the owner must notify his insurance company, otherwise the cover will be invalidated. Most leading insurers advise that the conversion work should be done by an LPGA Approved Installer and some companies will only insure a vehicle if this is the case.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

All participants in the Scheme agree to provide customers with a detailed Drivers Operation Manual and provide back up service. In the event of any dissatisfaction the LPGA operate a complaints procedure. The objective is to reach a satisfactory resolution to the problem which if not achieved will lead to the company's participation in the Scheme being reviewed and possibly withdrawn. To commence the procedure the customer needs to complete a "Vehicle Defect Report" form available from the LPGA. Where there is concern regarding the quality of a conversion there are companies who can undertake an independent inspection.
